About Sete Cidades Natural Reserve

Sete Cidades Natural Reserve is located on the western part of São Miguel Island in the Azores archipelago, Portugal. The reserve protects the immense volcanic caldera known as Caldeira das Sete Cidades, which features two spectacular crater lakes — Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake) and Lagoa Verde (Green Lake) — whose contrasting colors are attributed to differing depths and algae presence. The area is a product of a massive volcanic eruption thousands of years ago, creating a dramatic landscape of sheer cliffs, lush forests, and volcanic cones. The reserve encompasses a mosaic of habitats, including native laurel forests, peat bogs, and endemic plant species, supporting a variety of birdlife such as the Azores chaffinch and several migratory species. Historically, the Sete Cidades caldera has been central to local legend and culture, inspiring folklore about the lakes’ colors being reflections of a tragic love story. Visitors to the reserve can enjoy hiking numerous trails that provide panoramic viewpoints overlooking the lakes and caldera rim, mountain biking routes, and tranquil spots for birdwatching and photography. Key landmarks include the Vista do Rei lookout and the picturesque village of Sete Cidades. The reserve’s mix of rich ecology, geological wonders, and cultural history makes it an appealing destination for outdoor recreation and nature appreciation, especially for those drawn to volcanic landscapes and island ecosystems.
